Serco on Thursday unveiled its latest fuel- and carbon-friendly trailer offering, which it said would save operators an average of 2.5% on fuel consumption.

The trailer, fitted with aerodynamic accessories, could potentially save an operator R22 700 a year per trailer, based on 15 000 km of travel at current diesel costs.

On the back of ever-increasing fuel prices – which made up about 40% of an operators overheads – fuel-efficient accessories and vehicles had become a focus in the industry, Serco MD Clinton Holcroft said on Thursday, the company stated.

Serco conducted extensive road tests, undertaken in conjunction with Spar and Mix Telematics, of two 15 m trailers – one fitted with trailer side skirts and a roof diffuser and the other without aerodynamic accessories – between September 24 and October 12.

Trailer side skirts redirect air past the running gear and the underside of the trailer, while the recessed roof diffuser reduces back pressure and wind drag behind the vehicle.

The test aimed to monitor and control industry-specific variables to measure whether accessories provided cost-saving benefits to transporters that seeking ways of reducing their fuel use and carbon emissions.

Both trailers were loaded with 24 t of cargo and hauled by Mercedes-Benz Actros horses moving at an average speed of 67 km/h.
